The Flintstones - S1E4 - No Help Wanted

 The Flintstones

Season 1
Episode 4
"No Help Wanted"
Original Airdate: 10/21/1960

Opening Teaser: The screen opens up to a new character golfing out of a sand trap.  Fred is waiting next to the hole.  The golfer smacks the ball, and it goes up through the ground and into the hole.  We then head to credits with a shot of Fred crying.

Synopsis: Following the credits, we return to Fred walking back into the house after work.  Wilma sees Fred walking up, and lets their pet Dino know who excited runs outside, tackles Fred, and licks his face.  Fred laughs ticklishly as Dino continues to go crazy at his arrival.  As Fred finally gets back up, Wilma welcomes him home, and mentions how Dino was super happy to see him come home and gave him a big welcome home tonight.  Fred comments how Dino always gives him a big welcome home every night.

Wilma is cooking dinner as Fred stands behind talking to her.  He tells a story about going to see Barney's boss as the "Collective Bargaining Organizer".  He then mentions making some demands, and afterwards he sent Barney to go talk to his boss.  Fred complains how he hasn't seen him since, suggesting he is living it up without him.  He considers this a good thing.  He keeps saying things implying that this really bothers him, despite his pleas to the contrary.  He then looks down at his plate, and loses his cool.  There is a single small smelt on his plate.  He yells at Wilma, and demands to know where the dinosaur steaks he bought the night before are.  She tells him that he gave it to Betty and Barney.  Fred takes this as not only is Barney getting a raise from his doing, but now has to mooch food off his wife.  He sets off to go see Barney.  Wilma stops him, and informs him that his actions have cost Barney his job.  She gave the steaks to them because they haven't have a decent meal in a week.  Fred feels super guilty about this, and with Wilma's encouragement, agrees to help Barney find work again.

Fred goes over to Barney's house to apologize, and help Barney.  Barney and Betty are very tense about talking to Fred.  They stutter their voices, and seem uneasy about the visit.  After some awkward small talk, Betty sends them into the den to talk while she looks for a snack (if any) to make them.

In the den, Fred apologizes, and tells Barney he will help him out.  He explains to Barney that he's playing golf with a very important person the next day, and should have a lock for getting him a new job.

The next day on the golf course, Fred explains to Barney that he will be the caddy for his golf pidgin.  Barney remarks on how nice the course looks and asks Fred how he affords it.  Fred says he can't, but he never loses so he always gets invited back.  He then devises a scheme where Barney (who doesn't know one club from another) will select the clubs for his opponent to use, giving Fred an unfair advantage.

Mr. Edgar Boulder, Fred's golf pidgin, shows up and is introduced to Barney.  They hit it off quickly as Edgar appreciates Barney's sense of humor.  Fred mentions how Barney will be caddying for Boulder today, because he needs the money.  Boulder shows an element of surprise at this as he's always heard about them, but never met one.  Barney states that there are many like him, while Boulder considers his "rich and sheltered" lifestyle.

Fred begins to tee off, and yells "FORE!".   Mid-swing, Barney asks Fred what this means.  Fred, now having his concentration broken, yells angrily at Barney to never do that, and to be quiet when someone is teeing off.  Barney makes an under the breath comment to Boulder as Fred yells at him to be quiet.  Fred hits the ball so hard, it boom-a-rangs back at them, and smacks Fred on the head, before landing back on the tee.

Next, we see Barney instructing Boulder to use a putter to drive the ball with.  Thinking Barney is a professional caddy, he takes his advice, and uses the putter to sink a hole-in-one.  Fred yells out and stares in disbelief at what has happened.  Boulder thanks Barney, as Fred mutters on.

Fred's next shot, ricochets off a rock, and gets lodged in Fred's right eye.  Barney laughs, as Fred looks makes comments back at him.

Now we see Boulder has become stuck in a sand trap.  He asks Barney for advice, and Barney hands him a driver.  Boulder is a little unsure, but takes his advice. We now go back into the scene from the teaser.  Fred chuckles at Boulder using the driver in a sand trap, and bets him double or nothing on the hole.  Boulder hits the ball out of the trap, through the ground, and into the hole.  Fred breaks down crying at this, and regrets making it double or nothing.

In the next scene, we see Boulder counting the money he won from Fred in the game.  As this happens, Barney reminds Fred about the job.  Fred asks Boulder to give Barney a job, implying that he's not all there.  Boulder rejoices at this, and says he would do anything for Barney.  He tells him to call him by his first name Edgar, and to go and see his friend Rocky Stone, who will set him up with employment.  He gives Barney his card with the address on the back.  Barney thanks him again, and Edgar says his farewell, while telling Fred he will see him next weekend.

Fred laments his loss, but states it's only fair that Boulder should win at least once in a while.  As Fred continues to look somber, Barney asks what's wrong.  Fred states that the money he lost in double or nothing was supposed to pay the delinquent payment on the television set.  He cannot tell Wilma about his irresponsibility.  Barney says he will go look into the job right away, and thanks Fred for his help.

Barney goes to Rocky Stone, and explains how Mr. Boulder sent him down to get a job.  Stone speaks highly of Boulder, and hires Barney on the spot.  When Barney asks what he'll be doing, Stone vaguely describes the job in unorthodox terms.  He shows Barney a picture of people being thrown to lions, and tells him to keep that in mind while working.  He then tells Barney he will be a Furniture Repossessor.  Barney seems unsure of this, but Stone talks him into it, by looking at them being victim because the client did not pay their bill as promised.  Barney agrees and takes his oath, before he sets out on his first assignment: repossessing a TV.

As Barney walks towards his first assignment, he thinks about starting small, and going big.  When he checks the name on the card, he is remorseful to see he has become the collector on Fred's TV set, since Fred is the one who got him the job in the first place.

Barney takes a seat underneath a tree, and weighs his options.  Fred is his best friend, and he could never do something to him that would hurt him. On the other hand, he and Betty are broke, and he needs the money.  After some thought, he considers his oath, and then devises a plan to get Fred to pay.

Fred is at home watching TV, when Barney shows up.  Fred invites him in, and offers him a drink.  As they talk, Barney mentions the importance of the TV, to which Fred pledge extreme loyalty to his TV shows.  He even states he would give his right arm for his programs.  This depresses Barney as it makes it more difficult on him.  Barney then talks about the delinquent payment, and tries to suggest different ways Fred could pay it.  Fred irritable tells him to quiet down, because he doesn't want Wilma to know where he stashes money.  Fred then questions the interrogation, and flat out states that he is broke.  He then begins questioning Barney about the new job.  Barney sadly tell him that he is quitting because it goes against his values.  Fred flat out rebukes this, and tells Barney he went out of his way to get him the job, and he will keep it.  He then launches into a huge lecture about being ruthless in the business world, only chasing money, and having no other aspiration to get in the way.  Fred inspires Barney to go and complete his job regardless of what it may call for.  Barney thanks Fred for the pep talk, and grabs the TV as Fred holds the door for him.

Next, Fred is sitting looking at a TV Guide, when he notices his TV is missing.  He then goes chasing after Barney, and asks him why he took his TV.  Barney then tells Fred that his new job is a Repossessor, and he needs to collect Fred's TV Set for lack of payment.  Fred forces him back towards the house, while Wilma comes outside to see what all the commotion is about.  She asks Fred what he and Barney are doing with the TV.  Fred says they're "airing out the aerial".  Wilma rejects this answer, and demands that they both bring it back inside the house before it gets damaged.  She is not wise to the fact that Fred did not pay off the delinquent fee.

Barney and Fred move the TV back into the house, and Fred forces Barney out the door.  All the excitement has made Fred hungry, so he goes into the kitchen to make a sandwich, and get some more tiger milk.  While distracted, Barney sneaks into the house to repossess the TV.  Fred comes back into the living room with his snack.  Barney sees Fred coming, and puts the TV down, and jumps inside of it to hide.  Fred is confused about the TV being off of the stand, and resigns the fact that he didn't actually do it.

Fred places the TV back on the stand (with some help from Barney).  He turns it on, and Barney does his own commercial encouraging viewers to pay up on their late bills.  Fred gets irritated, and order Barney out of the TV set.  He begins to shake it, and then slams it down before going for his golf clubs.  Barney, while wearing the TV set, runs out the door.  Fred begins pursuit of him, unsuccessfully.

We then come to Fred seeing a kid playing outside.  He asks if he's seen a television running?  The kid repeats the question confused.  Fred tells the kid "never mind", since he sees Barney.  The kid then mentions how the more he sees of grown-ups, the more he wants to stay a child.

Fred chases Barney into the TV store.  Fred walks amongst many TVs searching for his own.  A salesman asks him if he is finding everything ok.  Fred tells him what he is looking for, and the salesman, taking him literally, breaks down crying, thinking he doesn't have the right TV for Fred.  After Fred finds Barney and his TV, the salesman responds happily realizing he did have what Fred wanted after all.

Fred then runs Barney out of the TV store, and after catching up to him, beats him out of the set.  Wilma sees this, and asks Fred why they are both downtown with their TV set.  Fred gives up trying to hide the truth from her, and asks Barney to tell her the whole story.

After telling her the story, Wilma is very disappointed in Fred.  She scolds Fred for taking his anger out on Barney, when it was Fred's fault to begin with.  She gives the TV to Barney, so that he can complete his job, and tells him no hard feelings for it.  Barney thanks her for the help, and attempts to make amends with Fred, who grumbles in return.  Wilma then informs Fred that he is going with her, so that she can keep an eye on him.

Back at the Flintstone house, Fred is grumbling about Barney "stealing" his TV as he carries groceries into the house.  He looks at the TV as he grumbles, but then suddenly drops the groceries, and goes running back to it.  He is shocked and in awe that it has returned.  Wilma discovers a note from Barney that states he got an advance on his first week's salary, and has paid Fred's TV bill.  He tells him not to worry about the money, as he values Fred's friendship above all.  Fred feels embarrassed and ashamed that he has been belittling his friend the entire time, only for him to come through for him in a pinch.  Barney then drops by the house, where he and Fred make amends, and Wilma invites him in for some Sabertooth Tiger Milk.  Barney tells Fred how he was just doing his job, and informs him that he is there to collect on another late item: Fred's golf clubs.  Fred becomes enraged at this, and kicks Barney out of the house, threatening to beat him up if he persists.  Wilma comments on the short-lasting peace being "par for course", before fading out to the end credits.

Conclusion:

I really love how this episode played around the entire theme of golf, even up to Wilma's comment to close out the show.  The show does a great job showing how the ruthlessness of business can tear people apart when they consider conflicts of interest, especially in the business of repossession.  This works two ways as golf and business tend to go hand in hand together.  It also had a good lesson on the issues with dishonesty.  In the long run, Fred could have saved himself a lot of trouble by taking the honest way out.  But then, there'd be no show.

We next go to Jesse's room, where he continues to unpack his belongings, and set up his room.  While hanging a poster, Steph comes into his room and asks what he's doing.  He explains that he's putting up some Elvis posters in the room.  Steph whines about him covering up the bunnies, which he claims are too pink.  Steph then says that her mom painted those just for her.  Jesse immediately rips down the poster, and agrees to keep the bunnies uncovered.  Danny comes in, and lets Steph know it's time for her to go to sleep.  Joey comes chugging in pretending to be a train, which picks Steph up on his back, and takes her over to her room.

The adults all follow, as they say good night to the girls.  Steph asks for Jesse to tell her a bedtime story.  He insists he doesn't know any, until Steph turns on the waterworks.  He begins to tell a story about Cinderella.  The adults each take turns sharing different parts of the story.  They add characters, change different elements, and have fun with it.  Jesse closes out the story before saying good night.  As Steph goes to bed, she gives the adults a stack of storybooks and telling them to brush up on their storytelling.

Later that night, the adults go to leave the house when Danny holds them up.  Someone needs to be at the house to watch the kids.  Jesse has band rehearsal, Joey has a 10:30p slot at the Laugh Machine, and Danny has to do the Sports at 10:00p.  Jesse gets stuck watching the sleeping kids and the house.

After Danny and Joey leave, D.J. and Steph come sneaking down the stairs.  They say hi to Jesse before continuing into the kitchen.  Jesse, realizing something is up, goes running after them.  In the kitchen, they inform Jesse that Danny always has a midnight snack ready to go for them.  They want ice cream and chocolate milk.  Jesse lets them know that he is wise to them.  He allows them to have a snack, but no cookies, and straight back to bed.  After eating the two bowls of ice cream, and drinking lots of chocolate milk, the girls are wide awake and riding a massive sugar high.  They energetically bounce around in their room, playing jump rope and the jump hive.

Downstairs, Jesse has invited the entire band over for practice at the house, but forces them to play an unplugged, muted session.  As they all stop playing, the girls coming running down the stairs.  The doorbell rings, and D.J. lets Jesse know that Danny always gets them an 11:00pm pizza.  Once the pizza arrives, Steph checks it to make sure the cheese didn't slide off.  D.J. then pays and tips the driver, and when he asks to stay and check out the band.  She lets him in, and the band begins to warm up.  After hours of rocking out in the living room, D.J. and Steph are now dancing to the music on the amplifiers.  Both have their hair spray-painted purple, and are dressed like rock starts.  Joey comes in and starts a Conga line with the pizza delivery boy.  The band falls in line, and they all start Conga-ing around the house.  Danny comes in, and has an out-of-body experience.  He demands the guys to the explain themselves.  D.J. and Steph run off to bed, but Danny stops them and forces them back over.  Jesse takes blame for the whole ordeal.  Soon, Michelle begins crying, so the entire family runs upstairs to tend to her.

They discover that she's growing in her very first tooth.  Nobody can calm her down, until Jesse puts his finger in her mouth which helps the teething.  Danny sends Joey down to get a teething ring, so that he can talk to Jesse alone.  Danny rips a Jesse a new one, before walking out of the room.  Jesse tends to Michelle.

In D.J. and Steph's room, the girls talk about Jesse, and how they got him into trouble.  Danny asks the girls to talk with him.  He talks about Uncle Jesse being irresponsible.  He discovers the empty ice cream cartons and chocolate milk containers in their room.  Danny informs them that Uncle Jesse will be leaving, and he may even involve the police.  The girls quickly stop him and fess up.

In Michelle's room, Jesse keeps taking care of Michelle's tooth.  He picks her up, and carries her over to his room.  D.J. and Steph meet them in the hallway and follow them in.

In Jesse's room, they apologize to him for everything.  Danny walks in and sends the kids to bed.  Joey comes up, and announces that he couldn't find the teething ring, so he brought the next best thing: a carrot.  Danny looks on in disbelief as Joey attempts to feed infant Michelle a raw carrot.  He walks over and thanks Jesse for taking the rap for the girls.  He apologizes for his anger, and admits he is just worried about the girls since the loss of their mother.  Jesse admits he worries about them too.  They all talk about parenting skills being so difficult.  Danny reassures them that it will just take some time.  They all want it to work, and while it's difficult now, it will become easier later.  Jesse admits the kids are growing on him.  Joey admits he's happy to be around other people.  Danny takes Michelle back, and attempts to sing her a lullaby.  Joey saves him by switching to a Conga, and they all Conga back into Michelle's room to put her to sleep.

The Flintstones - S1E3 - "The Swimming Pool"

 The Flintstones

Season 1
Episode 3
"The Swimming Pool"
Original Airdate: 10/14/1960

Opening Teaser: The screen opens up to Barney Rubble and a band rocking out on their instruments.  They are evidently playing Fred Flintstone's birthday party.  Wilma encourages Fred to blow out his candles.  He blows so hard, the cake goes flying off, missing a ducking Barney, and lands in the horn player's instrument, with the candles coming out the note holes.  Barney and the bass player just laugh and keep going.  A local neighbor, woken up by all the noise, yells out his window for everyone to be quiet, so that he can get some sleep.  We then see a "Tarzan" Fred, yelling from the top of a building, and then swinging on a vine.  He glides into a swimming pool, and smacks into the wall.  Barney, yelling out that he will rescue Fred, jumps off the diving board.  He lands flat on his back, and slowly sinks as the opening credits begin.

Synopsis: Following the credits, we return to Fred driving down the road somewhere.  He comes to a stop just outside his house and retrieves the groceries from his seat.  As he is walking in, he sets the groceries down so that he can hop the fence.  In the process, he unknowingly drops a package on his fence.

He calls out to Wilma, and lets her know that he brought some food home to cook for dinner.  As he excitedly pulls out the food, he announces to Wilma what it is.  It's at this point, he realizes the dinosaur steaks he bought are missing.  Wilma says he must have left them at the butcher, but Fred insists he had them before he got in the door.  He then smells a BBQ smell coming from Barney's back yard.  It smells like steak, prompting Fred to assume Barney stole the steaks and is cooking them for himself.  Barney greets him, and shows off the steaks, which match the ones Fred described perfectly.

He mumbles to himself about beating Barney up for stealing his steaks as he marches over to Barney's house.  He then hops the fence, and proceeds to pound Barney over the food.  Barney pleads with him to let go of the steaks.  Wilma comes outside during the scuffle and finds Fred's missing steaks sitting on the fence.  She tells Fred he owes Barney an apology.  Fred apologizes by bashing Barney's head with the 2 steaks on a stick.

We next go to a scene where Wilma and Betty are talking about Fred and Barney on the phone.  We find out that it's been about 5 days since the event occurred and Fred and Barney refused to talk to each other.  Betty has plead with Barney, but he simply refuses.  She then threatens to "have her mother come and visit for a week".  Suddenly Barney shows up at the Flintstones door.  He asks Wilma how everything is going, and she says fine, and that she will go and get Fred.

Fred is outside doing yard work and grumbling.  Wilma calls out to him, and lets him know a friend has arrived.  Fred retorts that if it's Barney, he is no friend of his.  Wilma scolds him for this.  Barney announces it is fine, and he is just there to return the ladder Fred had borrowed from him some time ago.  Barney then pulls the ladder away from the house causing Fred to fall.  Barney then takes off in a wild run.  As Fred chases him, he hops the fence, and falls into a hole.  As he threatens his neighbor for the hole, Barney informs him that this is going to be his new swimming pool.  This causes Fred to completely forget why he was angry at Barney.  Fred tries to smooth things over by giving Barney a super complex, and nonsensical "sales pitch".  Barney tries to run away, but Fred catches him and holds him in place.

We then come to a scene where Fred is chiseling out "swimming pool blueprints" onto a slate of rock.  It shows Barney's pool being half in Fred's yard, and half in Barney's yard crossing the fence.  Barney seems overly cautious about these plans.  Fred continues back into his "sales pitch" on about what it takes to maintain a pool.  Even listing things that Barney is unsure of.  At the end of his "pitch", he offers Barney a "Do-It-Yourself Pool Kit".  Inside is a shovel, to dig out the pool.  Barney is overjoyed at the gift, and he and Fred make amends.  Fred gets Barney to work on digging the pool.

We go back to Wilma and Betty narrating the story on the phone.  They are both glad that the men are hanging out together again, but Wilma is concerned that Barney is doing all the work.

Back outside, Fred sits on his new diving board looking down at the pool under construction.  Barney looks super exhausted and complains how his half isn't even finished yet.  Fred states that he will help, by getting Barney a bigger bucket.  Fred then goes down to the pool store to get an inner tube.  The salesmen compliment his physique, so Fred sucks in his gut, and the tube falls off.

Fred is then seen driving home.  He is hoping that Barney has finished filling the pool.  He arrives just as Barney finishes with the last bucket of water.  Both men shriek out "YAH HOO"  and run inside to get their swimming trunks.  Both come running out and dive off the diving boards.  They both crash into each other midair, and fall into the water together.

Betty is seen outside pumping water out of Barney, while Wilma does the same with Fred.

Wilma is taking Fred's lunch out to the pool for him, as Betty asks when they are going shopping.  Wilma asks how Barney is, and Betty says that he is going to practice Spearfishing in the pool.  As Fred calls out for his lunch, Wilma takes it to him, and asks him to make sure nothing happens to her dishes.  As she heads back to the house, she is frightened, and jumps into an umbrella for safety.  Barney has arrived with Spearfishing gear on.  As he continues over to the pool, Fred asks Barney what he is wearing.  As Barney explains it to him, Fred cautions him not to point his bow at him while it is loaded with a spear.  Barney accidentally lets go, and the spear flies all around the yard.  It eventually strikes Fred's inner tube, and causes him to fall into the water.  Barney catches the dishes before they have a chance to fall in with him.  He then proceeds to eat Fred's lunch.

The next day, we see Fred digging a new cave out at work.  He is excited for quitting time, because he intends to go swimming when he returns home.

Fred drives home, hops the fence, and runs for the pool.  When he gets there, he is frustrated to find that Barney has invited the YCMA over to swim.  Fred walks on top of swimmers as he argues with Barney over people they have both invited to come swim.  Fred demands to know when he can use his half of the pool.  Barney reminds Fred that his half is actually his half, and he just lets Fred use it.  Fred calls Barney an ungrateful ingrate.  Fred then builds a fence directly over the pool, which Barney feels mistreated over.  Fred slams a fence post down on Barney's head and walks away.

Wilma returns home from shopping with Betty, and is annoyed to see they now have a spike fence up.  Fred declares that this is the fairest way to resolve the dispute.  He then informs her that he is going swimming.  He goes racing out the door, and jumps into a drained swimming pool.  He looks up and asks Barney what is going on.  Barney replies that he took out his half of the water.

Next, we see Betty standing in her yard looking angry.  She forces Barney to refill the pool with water.  Wilma forces Fred to take down the fence.  The women declare their friendship as the reasons for the boys coming together.  Wilma calls for an end to their arguing.

We then see the women chatting along the fence.  Fred overhears their conversation and mocks it from inside the house.  Betty reminds Wilma of a brunch Barney is having.  Wilma tells Betty that she's just tell Fred that Barney is having a pool-warming party.  Fred gets upset over this, and calls Wilma back into the house.

Fred confronts Wilma inside the house over Barney using his half of the pool for his pool-warming party.  Wilma gets fired up, and speaks sternly while staring Fred down.  Fred gets the message.

We then see the phone ring, and a guy named Mac answers the phone for a guy named Charlie down at the local pool hall.  We watch as Charlie runs the table before taking his call.  Fred is calling in a favor.  He asks Charlie to dress up as a police officer, and bust Barney with a "disturbing the peace" call.

Fred eagerly waits by the window, as Wilma become suspicious about what he is up to.  She acknowledges Barney being Fred's best friend, and that he has been undeserving of such a good friend.  The doorbell rings, and Barney shows up with a cake and several friends as they sing Happy Birthday to Fred.  Fred is overcome with emotion, and forgives Barney.

This leads back into the teaser sequence, where we see Fred blow out his candles, and the neighbor gets angry over the noise.  As the neighbor keeps getting rattled out of his bed, he calls the 5th Precinct and asks them to respond to the noise.  The dispatcher sends car 809 to the neighborhood to respond to the complaint of a riot.

As the police head to the party, Fred prepares to Tarzan jump off the house with a vine.  He slams into the pool wall, and just like the teaser, Barney declares he will come in to save him.  He lands flat on his back, and slowly sinks in.  Betty mentions to Wilma at a table about how much fun Barney is having.  The police officer arrives to end the party.  He threatens to book them with 3 charges if they refuse to disburse.  Fred, thinking it's his friend Charlie, decides to ad-lib a bit for the crowd.  He challenges the officer's calls to disburse.  The officer responds confused to Fred, and threatens to take him in.  Fred ignores this, and prepares to push him into the pool, right as Charlie shows up beside him.  Fred knocks the officer into the pool before realizing Charlie is standing right next to him.  Fred is arrested and booked on several charges.

Fred is taken to jail, where he laments that he didn't even get to have a piece of his own birthday cake, and he questions the choices he has made that routinely gets him into these messes.  Barney shows up outside his window, to check in on Fred, and promises to make bail for him.  He also delivers Fred a piece of cake that causes Fred to breakdown emotionally.

Barney bails Fred out, and drives him home.  When Fred asks if Wilma is still there, Barney mentions that she paid the bail money.

Fred and barney make amends in the backyard.  They both run in to grab their swimming trunks.  Fred runs out and leaps off the diving board.  Barney stops short, remembering he had to drain the pool to clean it.  Fred leaps off the diving board, and lands headfirst in a cleaning bucket.  The episode ends with him muttering as the show closes.

Fred's Pitch to Barney on Co-Owning the Swimming Pool
Fred: I'm gonna show you how you can get your pool for nothing.
Barney: I don't get it
Fred: Well, it's simple.  If you build half a pool, and somebody gives you the other half free...
Barney: Yeah
Fred: ...You're getting your half for nothing, right?
Barney: But who's giving me the other half free?
Fred: Who is your bosom buddy, close pal, and lifelong friend?
Barney: How many guesses do I get?
Fred: Barney, you're looking right at him
Barney: See you around, bosom buddy, close pal, and lifelong friend.
Fred: (Grabs Barney) Come back here!
Barney: What's that supposed to be?
Fred: A diagram of the finished pool.  This is how it works.  Here's your half, and here's my half that you get free with a diving board at either end.
Barney: You keep saying I get your half free, but it's in your yard.
Fred: Well, without my half you only got half a pool, right?
Barney: Yeah but...
Fred: All right.  Now look at the advantages of owning a pool with somebody else.  You get all the expenses, the chlorine, the filters, the pool toys, the cranophrane, the phonostein.
Barney: The what?
Fred: Cranophrane and Phonostein.
Barney: Oh
Fred: You gotta put it in every week, you know?
Barney: Sure
Fred: And it'll cost money.  We own the pool together, we share the cost.
Barney: We do?
Fred: And besides all that, I'm throwing in this little surprise free (Give Barney a "Do It Yourself Pool Kit").
Barney: For me?
Fred: For you buddy.
Barney: You're one of the good ones, Fred.  I'm ashamed of myself.
Fred: Some friendships are written in blood Barney-boy, but this one is written in water.
Barney: Water?
Fred: Pool water that is.
Barney: That's funny
(Both Laugh)
Fred: (Shouting) Start Digging!!

(Filling up the pool)
Barney: At this rate, it's gonna take all day
Fred: No it's not.  Relax, Barney, because I'm gonna help you.
Barney: You are?
Fred: Yes.  I'm gonna get you a bigger bucket.

Fred: How do I look?
Pool Store Salesman: Très chic sir.  You might say around the world in 80 inches.

Fred: Last one in is a hot potato! (Multiple times throughout episode)

(Wilma and Betty pump water out of the boys)
Wilma: We should have left them in there for good.
Betty: Don't give me any ideas

Fred: WILMA!
Wilma: I'll be right back.  I gotta go feed the fish

Barney: Hi Fred!
Fred: And what are you made up for?
Barney: I'm gonna practice spearfishing.
Fred: You can't lose.  You'll spear them, or they'll die laughing.

Wilma: (To Fred) Now what?  We're only gone a couple of hours, we come back and you've got a spike fence up.

Fred: WILMA!
Wilma: (To Betty) Sounds like the call of the male gripe-o-saurus.

Fred: Is Wilma still mad?
Barney: Eh, she'll get over it.  She gave me the bail money, didn't she?
Fred:

Conclusion:

This is a great episode that explores the working of Fred and Barney's relationship.  They don't always get along, but they always end up friends at the end of the day.  This episode also shows just how strong the friendship is between Wilma and Betty.  They both use their own ways to get the men to make amends.  Wilma calms down in this episode from the last one, and Fred tends to be a bit more violent and destructive in this one.  All in all a good episode.

The Flintstones - S1E2 - "Hot Lips Hannigan"

 The Flintstones

Season 1
Episode 2
"Hot Lips Hannigan"
Original Airdate: 10/7/1960

Opening Teaser: The screen opens up to a jazz band playing as Fred Flintstone sings "When the Saints Go Marching In", as we roll into opening credits.

Synopsis: Following the credits, we return to the Loyal Order of Dinosaurs building in downtown Bedrock.  We later see that Fred and Barney are both members.  Barney is looking forward to the annual benefit show the next week.  Fred is happy, but bothered by the fact that he has to do a solo act.  Every year he normally gets up and sings, but this year he wants to do something different.  Barney talks about doing something.  Fred laments the fact that an "no-talent" like Barney is not worried, but Fred is.  Fred takes this as a challenge to put on a better act than Barney does.  As they bid each other a good night, we are left on Fred's anger for the challenge.  Fred mocks Barney's carefree attitude, and questions his friendship.

We enter into a scene with Wilma and Fred inside their home.  Wilma is trying to cheer up Fred after 2 days brooding over the show.  She suggests he sing another song, to which Fred agrees citing tradition.  He then mentions how he "used to sing in a band" which Wilma mimics word-for-word.  She grows annoyed at his story, and shows her disdain for it.  He attempts to show her his singing skills, and she screams for him to stop it.  It finally ends when she throws a vase in his mouth.  She then kicks him out of the house.

We then see Fred relaxing out in the back yard while looking disgruntled.  He mutters something about women, when Barney starts bouncing on the other side of the wall.  He asks what's going on, and Barney show him his new trampoline.  Fred is intrigued by this, and jumps over the wall, despite warnings from Barney not to.  He ends up bouncing so high, he crashed through a tree before landing on a lower branch.  Unfazed, he is determined to get back on the trampoline and master it.

Barney then watches as Fred begins to master the trampoline.  Fred asks Barney if he can borrow the trampoline while Wilma is dressmaker shop the next day.  Barney reluctantly agrees to it, so long as Fred returns it immediately.

The next day, Fred is outside the dressmaker shop while Wilma is checking out new outfits.  He begins to bounce on the trampoline, when he accidentally looks into the another woman dressing.  As she screams in terror, she exclaims how a man is outside her window.  Wilma offers to go look, and despite missing him early on, eventually sees Fred outside to which she shows great disappointment.  She bashes him on the head with a frying pan as the trampoline sends him back up for multiple hits.

Back at home Wilma is stewing about Fred's actions.  She storms over to Fred ignoring her as he works on a magic routine for his act.  He insists on showing her a trick.  She is unamused and breaks the egg in his hand during the reveal.

Fred then attempts to pull a sheet off a fully-laden table.  Wilma pleas for him to stop, but he pulls anyways, and smashes all the dishes that were on the table.  This irritates Wilma further.  Barney and Betty come over after hearing the crash to make sure everyone is safe.  Wilma explains that Fred is working on his magic act.  Barney asks questions about the disappearing cabinet equipment.  He is then goaded into doing the trick with Betty and Wilma readily volunteering.

Wilma forms a plan with Betty to entertain the trick by heading out of the box, and hiding in the bedroom, which prompts a giggle from Betty.  She agrees, and they both sneak out of the box.

Fred begins calling out a random assortment of magic words, and as the women giggle, he opens to find them gone from the box.  Barney and Fred both marvel at the discovery.  Barney asks for Fred to bring them back, to which Fred tells Barney to enjoy the moment while the girls are gone to savor when they bring them back.  He suggests going to the Rockland Dance Hall.  This really fries Wilma up, and she has to be held back by Betty, who reassures her that she has a better idea.

Fred and Barney joke about their apparent good fortune, and dance their way out of the house en route to the dance hall.  Betty suggests her plan, while Wilma asks about hospitalizing both of them.  Betty suggest heading down to the dance hall to catch them red-handed.  She suggests using costumes she has left over from the Annual Lodge Ball.  Wilma agrees to it, and then to hospitalize them.  They agree to meet back in 20 minutes.

Fred and Barney are driving to the dance hall as Barney mentions he can't dance.  Fred asks who is dancing, as he just wants to see the band "Hot Lips Hannigan" is playing there that night.  Barney is excited to hear this, and mentions that it's one of his favorite bands.  Fred them mentions singing with Hot Lips when he was in high school.  When Barney asks what happened, he explains how marriage got in the way.  Wilma got tired of Fred being out all night. Barney understands the sentiment.

Back in the house, Wilma and Betty are checking each other out in their new costumes.  Betty has Blonde hair in a pony tail with sunglasses and a purple dress, and Wilma is sporting down blue hair, with a green dress.  They begin speaking in mockingly hip fashion as they head out to the dance hall.

At the Rockland Dance Hall, Fred and Barney roll up hearing the sounds of the hall in the distance.  They roll up and sit outside admiring the music.

Inside, we see Hot Lips Hannigan entertaining the crowd with his playing.  He finishes the song to a roar of cheers.  Fred whistles and yells for an encore.  Hannigan promises to return later with more material.  Fred calls him over to hang out, and while initially thinking it's just a huge fan, he is overjoyed to see it's his old friend and colleague Fred.  Fred introduces him to Barney, and they catch up on lost time.  They talk about how life is difficult as you age, things going on in their lives, the music not being what it used to be.  As they reminisce through classic songs of their youth, Hot Lips asks Fred to come on stage with him and perform one of their old hits.  Fred isn't sure the crowd would be hip to it, but H.L. talks him into it, and Fred agrees as long as Barney can play too.  H.L. asks his drummer to sit a number out.

Hot Lips warms up the crowd with some introductions and a short monologue on what they are about to play.  He introduces Fred, and Barney, before Barney begins to strike up a beat on the drums.

A younger hip crowd makes jokes about the band being from an old folk's home.

Hot Lip and Barney blister into "When the Saints Go Marching In" and Fred's voice takes on new life, and becomes something amazing.

Wilma and Betty show up in their disguises, and are amazed to see Fred and Barney performing on the stage.

Fred leads an inspiring rendition that wins over the crowd that night.  Women begin fainting in the crowd.  He ends the song and has to take off running as he and Barney are being chased by a mob of screaming fangirls.  Wilma and Betty, in disguise, lead Fred and Barney into dressing room, where they are save.  Fred and Barney thank the two ladies for saving their lives.  Wilma and Betty flirt with the guys and make them feel super uncomfortable with how they are coming on to them.  The girls play around with the idea of replacing the wives to further mess with the men.

Fred and Barney make a run for it.  They run into Hot Lips and inform him of the situation.  He agrees to stall them while Fred and Barney make their getaway.  As the ladies stop in front of Hot Lips, he begins speaking to them in a deep voice.  Wilma bashes him on the head with her purse while bringing him down to reality.

Fred and Barney go running from the dance hall as Betty and Wilma laugh in the distance.

Fred and Barney drive home as they talk about the events of the evening.  Fred pledges to bring them back and immediately return the magic equipment.

Back in the Flintstone's house, Fred struggles to remember the chant to bring the girls back.  After yelling out another poor chant, they open the door to find the women from the dance hall, complaining about how they had forgotten them.

Fred and Barney take off running around the house.  Hiding in a room, Fred and Barney listen for any sound, and decide to take a peek.  After seeing nothing, they both come out of the room and laugh about how they got away with everything.  Barney, then noticing the wives, urges Fred to stop bragging.  Fred faints at the sight of Betty and Wilma.

Fred wakes up in bed to Barney tending to him.  He struggles to remember his name.  Fred calls Wilma over, and tells Fred they don't know about the other women.  As the Rubbles leave, Fred asks for Wilma to make him some food.  He then asks her how the magic trick was, and she responds in the voice of the other woman, letting go her secret.  Fred suddenly loses his appetite and goes to bed feeling sick as Wilma giggles about her own prank.

Conclusion:

Super interesting to see how Fred Flintstone had a different career path in his youth, and gave it all up for Wilma.  That shows his love and dedication for her.  There are a lot less threats and violence in this episode, but surprisingly the one who heats up the most is Wilma.  She isn't afraid to bash some people around, or tangle with someone who has made her angry.  Barney serves as a decent drummer, and Betty looks great as always.  Not a lot of new characters in this one, but still a good story building with regular cast characters.
